John Ohanian is the Chief Data Officer and Director for the Center for Data Insights and Innovation (CDII) Office within the California Health and Human Services (CalHHS) Agency. He and his team are tasked with a mission to transform data into insights, knowledge, and meaningful action. Prior to his role with CalHHS, John spent 30 years assisting local businesses and nonprofits in developing new organizational data systems, securing critical funding, incorporating social-enterprise strategies, and solving complex problems. John brings skills as a strategic leader in community engagement, government relations, systems integration, and change management as well as a passion for serving others and a talent for mitigating complicated issues to his role at the State of California. In his position leading the newly created CDII office, John is focused on identifying ways to collect better quality data to close existing disparities, innovate more efficient processes, and help ensure equitable distribution of resources to all communities in California. His personal mission is finding new ways to assist California’s most vulnerable individuals, families, and communities. John has four children and loves to venture out with his wife Victoria on road trips, but train travel is by far his favorite. He’s new to Northern California and enjoys exploring all that the area has to offer. John received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of San Diego and attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program where he earned his certification for Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management.
