Bill Beighe retired as the CIO of the Santa Cruz Health Information Exchange Organization (SCHIO) at the end of May 2022. Bill has been involved with health information exchange since 1998. Having served on various HIE related committees and BOD’s throughout that time. Bill continues to be engaged in advancing Health Information Exchange efforts in California and beyond.

The original Santa Cruz Health Information Exchange was established by Physicians Medical Group and Dominican Hospital in 1995. This multi-stakeholder HIE connects more than 100 organizations including multiple unaffiliated practices, hospitals, labs, safety net clinics and the public health department. The HIE interoperates with more than 20 EHR’s and other electronic systems. SCHIO provided the technal foundation to Whole Person Care in Santa Cruz and continues supporting that effort which changed to CalAIM early 2022.

The Santa Cruz HIE (SCHIO) currently exchanges more than 300,000 clinical documents electronically in standard format every month between more than 2,000 web and EHR connected users. The HIE offers an enhanced set of features and functionality consistent with a mature HIE including Clinical and Social Referrals, Authorizations, eHealth Exchange and Carequality (Sequoia) connectivity, care management, population health and electronic forms.
