Cheron Vail has more than 25 years of experience working in healthcare IT. She is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the Health Plan of San Joaquin (HPSJ) and is responsible for Information Technology performance and strategy. HPSJ serves 375,000 members in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties in the Central Valley of California.

Since 2012, she has been actively engaged in the creation and governance of the San Joaquin Community HIE (SJCHIE), a Health Information Organization (HIO) for San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced counties, originally established to support data sharing among providers participating in the local safety net. She currently serves as the Chairperson for the Board of Directors for the SJCHIE. The SJCHIE leverages the Manifest MedEx (MX) platform and support services.

Prior to joining HPSJ, Cheron served in executive and senior leadership positions in several health plans including Regence Health Plan (BCBS Oregon, BS Washington, BS Idaho, BCBS Utah), Providence Health Plan, First Dental Health Plan, and Aetna Health Plans.

Prior to joining the healthcare industry, she worked for the Navy and Marine Corps on command, control and communications systems, during which time she obtained a Master’s degree in Computer Science at the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, and a PhD in Computer Science at UCSD.
